Sherdog's Guide to the UFC Ultimate Fighter
If you're like me you are a fan of suspenseful mysteries like Murder She Wrote. Or maybe you prefer The Learning Channel, where you can find all the medical oddities you may need. Who doesn't like staring at a one-ton man or the occasional child born with a beak?
This week's episode contained both gripping mystery and a crash course in infectious disease.
I'd hoped that Pete Spratt (Pictures) and Chris Lytle (Pictures) might have a stand-up war on last week's episode. Mr. Lytle dashed my hopes as he made quick work of Spratt on the ground. Lytle put himself in the semifinals and despite the deep talent pool, I expect he'll end up in the finals.
All of the middleweights are busy speculating on who will be chosen to fight next. For a lot of fearless guys, they sure seem to chew their nails when it comes to match-ups. None of these vets want to get stuck fighting someone who can prey on their weaknesses.
With all the mystery in the air some verbal sparring commences and everything is all funny until Travis Lutter (Pictures) calls Pete Sell (Pictures) a bitch. Now while it's never really funny to be called a bitch, it's even less funny when it's a UFC veteran saying it. Turns out, Pete doesn't like to be called that. Pete eats some chips out of a bag and plots on Travis.
Scott Smith (Scott Smith' class='LinkSilver'>Pictures) decides to show off a nice — and by nice I mean “nasty” — looking rash on his armpit. Patrick Cote (Pictures) has some bumps too, then Jeremy Jackson (Pictures), then more bumps, and finally perhaps traced to Pete Sell (Pictures)'s big toe.
It's only natural. Sixteen filthy animals move into one house, share bathrooms, then it's off to the training mats where they basically roll around like playfully mean primates until God knows what spreads all over their bodies.
There's nothing worse than when some high school wrestling team shows up at the school nurse’s office with the same infection. It raises questions. Next thing you know the rash is the least of your worries.
Since Pete and Scott seem to have it the worst they are carted off to the E.R. to get some treatment. Once they return it is announced that they have the dreaded Staphylococcus infection. (Go ahead, sound it out when you read it or you can just call it Staph. Staph is one of life's sweetest rewards.) More infectious discussion ensues and Matt Serra (Pictures) starts talking about getting worms. One of the most frightening photos I've ever seen is some guy with a tapeworm wrapping a pencil as it leaves a sore in his body. It's haunted me for years.
Jeremy Jackson (Pictures) is my hero. This guy is a good fighter with a troubled life. He confesses to Din Thomas (Pictures) some of the sadder details. He's been down and out before and was living out of his car before he came onto the show. Jeremy is counting on this show to put him back on track. Now is the time where you cue something from the "8 Mile" soundtrack.
Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) took one of the teams to the Y or at least something like the YMCA. The guys got a change of pace as they spent the day splashing in the pool, awkwardly dribbling basketballs and planning a sexual rendezvous.
Yes, you heard me.
Jeremy Jackson (Pictures) apparently made a special connection with one of the lifeguards at the gym. Jeremy, being a hopeless romantic, decides to pull a Rand McNally and draws a map to the TUF house for the eager young lady.
Like any good mapmaker, he makes sure to point out the area behind the fence where he would like her to meet him. Jeremy must have known that there was a weakness in the perimeter or maybe Dana's twin Dobermans, Zeus and Apollo, just don't run there.
Either way, when the clock turned midnight, several of the TUF fighters were still sitting around the fire outside. Jeremy furtively glances around — with all this heat on him he's not too sure about his plan. Jeremy finally decides to make his move and pretends that he will retire to bed.
This suggestive gesture would have made the most cynical hypnotist proud. One by one his fellow fighters decide to bed down for the night and ever so slyly, Jeremy excuses himself to the yard. Once there he makes a clandestine escape (except for the constant eye of the cameras and the producers that feed off of them) over the fence to the waiting arms of a lifeguard who probably sounded like she was in distress within only a few minutes.
Leaving the house is a strict no-no, so I'm sure you can see what happens next. The morning training session is canceled and it doesn't take long for Jeremy's secret to get around. When Dana shows up he gives one of his typical "opportunity" speeches that he seems to have to give far too often. When he finishes his usual speech, Jeremy is told to pack his bags and is given the boot.
(I know what you're saying, "Why waste the opportunity to be back in the UFC just for a simple one night stand?” Well just e-mail me your size and I'll send you a pretty sundress, OK honey? He did it because he's a man and that's what men do. We scheme; we lie to friends; we sneak away and we jump fences. Why? We do it because there's a perfectly good and willing female just waiting on the other side of that fence. We're not proud of it.)
So Jeremy is removed and everyone is mind-blown that Jeremy would pull such a dumb stunt. He leaves the show with an uncertain future.
The Staph infections are still spreading across the show. Almost half of the contestants now have bumps in unpleasant areas. While the training ground is cleaned to stop the epidemic, the teams gather to make their choices for the next fight.
Team Mojo decides to pit Smith against Lutter.
Lutter is considered by some to be one of the better members of Team No Love, so it is an interesting choice.
Smith was robbed in his UFC fight against David Terrell (Pictures). Terrell took advantage of poor refereeing and was able to submit Scott.
Travis Lutter (Pictures) has had some ups and downs after knocking out Marvin Eastman (Pictures) and then getting choked out by Matt Lindland (Pictures).
Going into the fight Lutter wants to put Scott on the ground so that his BJJ will dominate, and Scott's depending on his takedown defense to keep that from happening.
Well kids, Lutter got what he wanted. Travis was able to get behind Scott and take him to the ground and after a few punches sunk in a choke/crank of some sort that ended this one rather peacefully. So that makes for two quick fights in two weeks and we were all left wanting just a bit more.
So tonight I want you all to pause before you go to bed. Take time to think about The Ultimate Fighter and how you'd like to have a better fight next week. Make sure to also take time to think about Staph infections as well because you can never be too careful.

Wandy's New Interview
I don't know how many have read the new interview by Sherdog of Wand, but all I can say is that there is going to be some seriously insane violence come Sunday. Holy Shit! Just Read it. Mirko, Barnett, and Nog are in deep fucking shit. Wand at 219 lbs. Oh, this is gonna get ugly.
Sherdog.com: How are you preparing yourself for this event?
Wanderlei Silva (Pictures): I am in an intense program. In this last week I’ve been working on my cardio and stamina. I have no injuries this time. I’m healthy and weighing 218.5 pounds. I am already used to this weight. I am going there to surprise everybody.
Sherdog.com: I’ve heard that your training sessions with your personal trainer, Rafael Alejarra, have been intense.
Silva: Yes they have. He is developing new machines, new tools. I come to him and say, “I would like to train this kind of thing,” and then he creates a new exercise focused on this point. This kind of job will bring new aspects of trainings to every MMA fighter.
Sherdog.com: And BJJ and Muay Thai training? How have they been?
Silva: I’m working hard. I’m training with the guys in the gym. I’m doing a lot of jiu-jitsu; we have several black belts in the team. Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga was there to help us, he taught us a lot of good things. We have Nino (Schembri), Cristiano (Marcelo), (Luiz) Azeredo. Everyone focused on this fight.
Sherdog.com: Mirko improved his takedown defense. And about you, how is your training in this aspect?
Silva: It’s good. I’m training with Christopher and Fabio, who are among the best in Brazil. I’m improving my takedowns because this is the point: don’t sleep or I will take you down. I’m good with takedowns and [Mirko] has a good defense. But I’m going there to make a stand-up fight. However, if I need to take him down I will.
Sherdog.com: You participated in other tournaments, but how can you be ready to face two tough fighters in the same evening?
Silva: In this case you must be better prepared than ever because it is impossible for anyone to be 100 percent ready to face two guys like this on the same night. Like I said, I like to be tested and I still didn’t find my limit. I’m close to the point I thought was my limit, but I know now that I can go far. For me it is an excellent opportunity to face such high caliber guys in the same night. I think, with God’s help, if I make it to the final fight this will be the event of my life. One thing I promise: I will do my best and whoever faces me will have hard times. I will go for it.
Sherdog.com: The fact that you faced “Cro Cop” once, will it help you now?
Silva: Not really because each fight has a different history. He is a respected man, an idol. I know this will be a tough fight, but I like this; I like to face tough guys. There are some guys around there who are too cocky, but they only challenge weaker guys. When they think they can have their ass kicked, then they became cans. So I think that a real man walks into a fight even if he’s not sure about winning. I like this; I like to take my chances. I like when they say, “Wow, can he do this?” That’s nice. The bigger the challenge, the more I like it.
Sherdog.com: Who is your bet to win the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictures)-Josh Barnett (Pictures) match?
Silva I think this is 50-50. It will be a hard fight. The American was a UFC champion once, so I think anything can happen. They never fought against each other before, so anything can be a surprise.
Sherdog.com: Can you imagine the repercussion and the significance of a fight between you and “Minotauro”?
Silva: For sure. I’m very anxious for this fight to happen. He is a very nice guy. We are friends, but when I step into the ring I don’t respect anybody. When the fight begins, I walk into the fight like an animal to knockout. I don’t care about how big the guy is or how famous he is. I’m in a phase I think I’m well prepared. I can face anyone and it will not be different against him. There are a lot of people saying things about it, but I don’t care. I’m going to punch faces, to walk into the fight, and I can leave a message. One iron chin has already fallen down. In MMA there are no guys that can’t be knocked out — if the punch hits the chin the guy is KO’d. If I hit the chin, the guy is down.
Sherdog.com: Recently some fighters have said controversial things about you, including Mirko, who said he doesn’t like you and you “have no ethics.” What do you think about that?
Silva: I can say the same about him (laughs). I don’t love him, too. He is too arrogant. He is trying to find fault with me and I don’t care if he doesn’t think I’m a nice guy. To hell with the nice guy stuff; he is too cocky. I don’t want to be his friend or friend to anyone else who doesn’t like me. I don’t want them to like me because when I’m in the ring punches fly to the face. It is not a tenderness time. I am not falling in love with him, and he knows when the fight starts I kick faces. When I fought him I was skinny, around 207 pounds, and I was trying to reach at least 214 pounds. Now I weigh 218 pounds. I’m fine, comfortable, with a hard punch, and I will make him walk back just like the first fight. And he knows it. Anyone can talk; even a parrot can talk. But to do these things is a different question.
Sherdog.com: Chuck Liddell (Pictures), after beating Renato Sobral (Pictures), said that a fight between you and him would be a one round fight.
Silva: For sure. He can’t survive the first round! When I get this guy … I actually don’t know what is happening. There are some people saying this fight will not happen but I would like to make myself clear: I want to fight him. I want it known, I don’t care if I get hurt, I will be healed by November. I want this fight. I want him. I don’t want people saying: “he goes to UFC to take a free promotion.” I don’t know what’s happening. The promoters are taking care of it. I want to shut him up by hitting his mouth. When I spoke in the microphone he was looking at me with a butt face and gave me a little smile because he knows who I am. He had his ass kicked by Quinton Jackson (Pictures) in PRIDE, and if he thinks he will be waiting just to hit me back he will pay for it. I am a Muay Thai fighter. I’m a heavy hitter. If I hit the chin, the guy is down.
Sherdog.com: What can your fans expect about your performance on September 10?
Silva: They can expect a lot of will to fight from me. I’m training as I never trained before in my life. I’ve hired an excellent personal trainer who makes me prepared, who takes care of me, giving me supplies, vitamins. I’m only eating, training and sleeping — nothing else. I’m preparing myself like I never did to please the crowd. I’m going there to give a big show and represent Brazil. The only fear I have is to not fight well, the victory is just a consequence. I like to electrify the crowd, make people shout out, get excited. I know my fans like it and I fight for them. Nowadays even my enemies have turned into my fans. I know they watch me when I fight and they will like what they will see because I’m strong, well prepared and I’m going for knockouts. I always look for the actual fight. I never wait for the next fight, because if I don’t win the first fight, I won’t have the next. So I will go for it. If I have to get hurt, I will fight the next fight hurt. I don’t care. I will go until the end. I will just give up after the fight has already finished. Never before that.

Stephan Bonnar test positive for roids
The Nevada State Athletic Commission on Wednesday filed a formal complaint against light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar , claiming the UFC 62 competitor tested positive for Boldenone, a banned anabolic agent commonly used by veterinarians to treat horses on the mend, MMAweekly.com reported Wednesday.
Bonnar, best known for his Ultimate Fighter season one runner-up performance, lost a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin before allegedly providing the tainted sample.
According to the NSAC complaint, Bonnar has 20 days to respond. Should he do so, a hearing in front of the NSAC will be set at which time the five-member regulatory body would make a ruling on the Chicagoan's status.
